The very words “sparkling water” suggests energy and positivity, so it can be no surprise that water itself can also be inspirational. Many writers, artists and musicians have drawn on water as the subject, or inspiration, for their work. In music, for example, Claude Debussy was very much inspired by water in all its states. Take his piece, “Reflets dans L’eau” (“Reflections in Water”), for instance.

The piano piece was written in 1905. As with much of Debussy’s work, it is impressionistic, meaning that it expresses emotions and senses, and is characterised by ambiguous and fast changing harmonies. It is one of the many pieces Debussy wrote about water, in particular about light reflecting off of its surface. The music creates an image of water being not quite still, then moving rapidly, and finally slowing down again. The work is regarded as one of the greater achievements Debussy achieved with this piano.

Debussy’s major, and most brilliant orchestral work, “La Mer” (“The Sea”), is one of the supreme achievements in the symphonic music. The sea the composer knew, from his visits as a child Cannes and his later travels in Italy, was the Mediterranean. The piece was also so modern in its structure, and unlike anything else at the time, that it is still considered modern today.

Drinking sparkling water may not make you a Debussy, but it will refresh you, fuel your brain and body and may even charge up your creative process.
